Kaleidoscope is the first novel of Shahnas MA, who is also the Editor of Olive Books. Her book has already been translated and published in Tamil by Jayashankar Menon early in May this year, released by the renowned Tamil author, Perumal Murugan. Her Malayalam novel has reached its third edition within a short span of one year. Dr. Abdullah Kavil has translated the Malayalam novel in Arabic.
The event will be presided over by Dr. M.K. Muneer, Chairman of Olive Publications and MLA of Kerala Legislative Assembly. T. Padmanabhan will officially release the book, while Malayalam film maker and author of the book, Oru Cinema Pranthante Chinthakal, also to be released at the SIBF on a different day, will receive the first copy. Salim Ayanath will introduce the book the audience while Dr. Abdullah Kavil will speak at the event and Shahnas will deliver the vote of thanks.
Kaleidoscope is a Malayalam novel written in a feminist perspective. As a woman, Shahnas could clearly understand the issues faced by women in the society. The novel progresses through the protagonist Durga, a bank official, seen through a Kaleidoscope and the author standing behind that and writing the stories.
While releasing Kaleidoscope in October 2018, M. Mukundan, one of the leading literary figures of Malayalam had spoken high about the novel and its author and analysed the new pattern of novel writing. Mukundan had said: “Books are not born alone. Along with the book an author is also getting born. Now with the release of Kaleidoscope, a book is born, also a female writer too is born. We can be glad about that. “At a time when loads of weeds (read books) that are mushrooming in our literary horizon, Kaleidoscope is positioned in a very high pedestal. Kaleidoscope is a small book where lot of flowers bloom. Among the increasing weeds, I am lauding Shahnas M.A. for offering us a flowering plant.”
In addition to the book published in three languages of Malayalam, Tamil and Arabic, the English translation of the book by Jayashankar Menon will be released soon. The very first novel getting rave reviews and entering the third edition within a year is in itself a phenomenal achievement for Shahnas and in addition to that adding more feathers to her cap are the translation of her book in Tamil and Arabic. With the release of English, her repertoire of talent would further traverse to more shores.
