Rakthasakshyam 2019, cultural fiesta that got kick-started at the Akethethara Sabari Ashram in Palakkad on January 10. The five-day event is part of commemorating the 150th birth centenary of Mahatma Gandhi and his 70th year of attaining martyrdom.
The Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission in the LDF Government, the veteran Communist leader, VS Achuthanandan inaugurated the event via video-conference. Government of Kerala’s Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Backward Classes, Law, Culture, Parliamentary Affairs and KSFDC, AK Balan was the Chief Guest. TR Sadasivan Nair, Director, Directorate of Culture, Government of Kerala; Palakkad District Collector D Balamurali; Prabhakaran Pazhassi, Cultural High-Level Secretary Committee Secretary;
Harijan Sevak Samaj Chairman N Gopalakrishnan Nair; Malampuzha Block Panchayath Vice President Kanjana Sudevan; Akethathar Grama Panchayath President D. Sadasivan; IUML District President Kalathil Abdullah; OV Vijayan Smaraka Samithi Secretary TR Ajayan and PA Gokuldas spoke on the occasion. AK Balan also inaugurated the Raksthasakthyam organised cultural history exhibit. Artists from Rajasthan, Gujarat and Punjab, numbering around 48, performed the village dance forms enthralling the crowd.
Earlier, the athletes from Palakkad took out a torch bearing rally from the Martyr’s Column from Fort Maidan and the District Panchayath President, Shantakumari flagged off the event. The District Sports Council President, Kandamuthan presided the event. The rally, accompanied by skating, Kalari Payattu (martial arts) and other sports items, when it reached Akethethara Sabari Ashram, the Akethethara Grama Panchayath President D Sadasivan and others welcomed torch bearing crowd. When the festival ends on January 14, the Governor of Kerala, Justice P Sadasivam will take part. The five-day fiesta will conclude the following day.
The programmes held on January 11 included a panel discussion, titled: Protection Against Denial of Justice, being taken part by C Radhakrishnan and KP Mohan, novelist and journalist respectively at 10.00 AM, another debate on the subject: Gandhi Against Denial of Gender Justice saw the wonderful presentation by Sister Jessy.
Post lunch, at 2.30 PM, the discussion veered around Principles of Social Justice and Gandhi (Justice Chettur Sankaran Nair). Evening at 5.30 PM, Minister for Water Resources, K Krishnankutty inaugurated the Memorial Meeting and at 7.00 PM the evening was spiced up various entertainment programmes.
