Kanchana Sisters, Carnatic vocalists Shriranjani and Shrutiranjani will perform at TAG Auditorium, RK Mission School in T Nagar Chennai tomorrow (December 27, 2018) 9.00 AM, accompanied on the violin by KVS Vinay and Mridangam by B Ganapathiraman.
Known differently as Kanchana Sisters (named after their village) and Kanchana Ranjani Sisters, Kanchana S Sriranjani and Kanchana S Shrutiranjani are among the most sought after duet vocalists in the Carnatic music arena today. The siblings were elected by the prestigious Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) panel of artists. The Kanchana sisters have been performing on prestigious platforms in India as well as overseas arenas.
Hailing from a family of musicians of Tamil Brahmins, settled in Bajathur Village in Dakshina Kannada Karnataka, the Kanchana sisters were initiated into Carnatic music at a very tender age of three years, by their father, Karnataka Kalashri Kanchana V Subbarathnam, the renowned violinist. The singing sensations began giving Carnatic concerts at the age of four. Both Shriranjani and Shrutiranjani are specialised in the rendition of the Avadhana Pallavis, which they of the “Avadhana Pallavi”s, which they learnt from their maternal uncle Dr. R.S. Nanda Kumar, Mysore.
The ability to render most complex compositions by playing different taalas with different nadai on both hands simultaneously, has enthralled thousands of music connoisseurs. Our country has only a few artists performing this kind of avadhana and these two sisters have excelled the extremes of this art. The precision of their avadhana performances with ancient convoluted taalas such as ‘Simhanandana’ (128 akshara kaala) and implementation of ancient taala angas, have made immense interest from the Rasikas. What is more, the Kanchana Sisters have documented their unique Avadhana art at the University of Hyderabad.
Besides being the toppers of their university in LLB (law) degree, both the sisters followed music as their passion and profession. Sriranjani and Shrutiranjani scored first rank in ‘Vidwath’ degree in Carnatic Classical Vocal and Violin from the Government of Karnataka. The sisters are “B High” graded artists in All India Radio (AIR). They have also earned multiple prestigious senior performer scholarships for music from India’s central government – Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) and other private organisations.
Concerts of Kanchana sisters have been telecast in the national television channel, Doorsharshan and other channels such as SVBC, Shankara, Udaya and other local TV channels. They have performed thousands of concerts and some of the most prestigious platforms include – The South Central Zone in Tanjavur and Vishakapattanam, Mysore Palace, Mysore Gnana Bharathi, Udupi Paryaya concerts at Rajangana, prestigious sabhas of Bangalore, Sangeetha Parishath Mangalore, Naadaniranjanam Tirupathi, Cannanore and many prestigious Sangeetha Sabhas across the country. They have also performed abroad in Paris (France), Norway and Singapore. Apart from rendering Carnatic concerts, Sriranjani and Shrutiranjani are also well versed in the rendition of Bhajans, Ghazals, Dasa sahithya, Vachana, poetic verses and more.
The siblings had conceptualised, directed and performed diversified music projects and some of the popular ones include “Vachana Viveka”, “Thyagaraja Seetha Kalyanam”, “Demonstration on Thiruppughal” etc. They are experts in notating poetic verses on the spot and have worked with renowned poets such as Shatavadhani Dr. R. Ganesh, Dwaraki Krishnaswami, Korgi Sankaranarayana Upadyaya and such others. They have also performed for Dance music with legends as Sundari Santhanam (disciple of Padma Subrahmaniam) and others. The duo have also composed and directed background music for many music albums, dance etc.
Some of the popular albums of Kanchana Sisters include –‘Hanumagiri Panchamukhi Anjaneya Suprabhatha’, ‘Kateel Durgaparameshwari Suprabhatha’, ‘Musical Affection’, ‘Ecstacy’, etc. The duo have received many awards namely – ‘Ananya Yuva Prathibha Puraskara’ from Ananya Bangalore, gold medal from Padmabhushana Dr. D.Veerendra Heggade for their music achievements and many other felicitations by renowned Educational Institutions, Religious Mutts, temples and famous personalities.
Kanchana Ranjani Sisters hail from a highly respectable family, which is renowned for patronage of music, for charity and benevolence. Kanchana Venkataramanayya, their great grandfather was a great patron of Yakshagana, Harikatha and music. His spouse, Anandalakshmi was a renowned Veena and Leg Harmonium maestro. Their son Kanchana Venkatasubramaniam rendered Yeoman’s service in the field of patronage and propagation of Carnatic music amidst dire financial adversities. No wonder Kanchana is rightly called the ‘Tiruvayyar’ of Karnataka. His son, Kanchana V.Subbarathnam is a violinist of great repute. Their Maternal Grandfather, Mahamahopadhyaya Dr. R.Sathyanarayana is a very renowned musicologist of International repute. His daughter – Rohini Subbarathnam (wife of Kanchana V. Subbarathnam) is also a great singer and composer. Kanchana Shriranjani is married to the renowned Mrudangam Vidwan K.U.Jayachandra Rao.
