UR Ananthamurthy Award for Prof MN Karassery for his contribution towards education sphere in Kerala
Professor MN Karassery or Mohiyuddin Naudukandiyil Karassery, the educationist, Malayalam writer and critic has bagged this year’s UR Ananthamurthy Award for his comprehensive contribution towards to the education sector of Kerala. Recognising his yeoman service, the Kerala Aided Higher Secondary Teachers Association (KAHSTA) has selected MN Karassery for this covetted award instituted in the name of the late Academician from Karnataka, UR Anandhamurthy. The award includes cash prize of Rs.10,001 and certificate of merit will be conferred on Prof MN Karassery on February 13, 2019 at a function to be held in Kozhikode, State President of KAHSTA, Joshi Antony told the media.
Mohiyuddin Nadukandiyil Karassery is a renowned academician, writer and critic in the Malayalam education and literary horizon. Known by his pen name, MN Karassery, the professor, in addition to his unique writing skills, he is also equally popular for his extempore speech on various subjects such as politics, literature, art and culture. What is more, MN Karassery has also received KM Seethi Shib Memorial Human Fraternity Award, in addition to hollding the distinguished chair in Malayalam studies at the University of Calicut.
Hailing from Karassery Panchayat in Kozhikode district of Kerala, he was simply being addressed as Mash by those who adore him, Prof MN Karassery was born to NC Mohammad Haji and KC Aishakutty on July 2, 1951. The young Mohiyuddin attended the Karassery Upper Primary School and Hidayathussibiyan Madarasa and Dars of Karassery Juma Masjid. Karassery then pursued his school education from Chennamangallur High School (1964-1967), subsequently for his college education he got enrolled in Guruvayurappan College (1967-1972) and Department of Malayalam, University of Calicut (1972-1974).
He graduated in Sociology and Malayalam achieving first rank and second class in 1972 and completed his post graduation in Malayalam with second rank and first division in 1974. After a decade, Karassery obtained PhD from his alma matter, the Malayalam department of the University of Calicut in 1993 under the tutelage of the leading orator, literary critic and academic scholar, the late Prof Sukumar Azheekode, who taught him for MA as well as PhD courses.
The dissertations Karassery presented included Novels of Vikom Muhammed Bahseer for his MA, Criticism of Kuttikrishna Marar for his MPhil and Literary and Cultural Values of Mappila songs for his PhD. Later he became professor of Malayalam at the University of Calicut in Kerala. A prolific writer, Karassery is also known for his great oratory skills. A renowned human right activist, Karassery’s commentaries in various periodicals were well received. Although, he did not have any political leanings, Karassery has great respect for Mahatma Gandhi and Abul Kalam Azad. Also known for the issue based support extended to the political dispensations, Karassery has never taken sides unless and until justice prevailed. A lone warrior of gender bias, for the last three
decades, Karassery is fighting against the discrimination faced by women in the Muslim community. Never deterred by the veiled threats from the orthodox religious heads, Karassery keeps vehemently opposing the doctrine of the religious state. Notably, Karassery had taken the might of Abul A’ala Maudidi, the founder of the Jamaat-e-Islami (1941). Karassery argued that the idea of Islamic State will ruin Islam and Muslims alike by becoming a breeding ground for religious fundamentalism and eventually to terrorism. A literary luminary, Karassery has many books to his credit. He was especially fond of the novels written by Vaikkom Muhammed Basheer, the critiques of Kutti Krishna Marar and Poet Kunhunni Mash. Karassery had written a gamut of critical writings, espousing the cause of standing by the ethics and aesthetics alike. A linguist to the core, he loves many languages. Always wary of bombastic writing, Karassery was favouring simple, lucid and direct prose.
Prof MN Karassery has written around 48 books. Makkayilekkulla Patha, translation of ‘The Road to Mecca’ by Muhammad Asad, published by Islamic Publishing House, Kozhikode in 1983; Husunul Jamal, The story of ‘Badarul Muneer – Husunul Jamal’ by Moyinkutty Vaidyar for children, published by AI Huda Book Stall, Kozhikode in 1987 running into third edition; Kurimanam, a collection of essays on modern Malayalam literature published by Malayalam Publication Kozhikode in 1987, which has been prescribed as a text book for
undergraduate students in the University of Calicut during 1987-88, which is running into its third edition; Thiruvarul Collection of selected verses from Holy Qur-an, published by Al Huda Book Stall in Kozhikode in 1988, which is in its second edition; Navathalam, a collection of selected modern poems of Malayalam written by different poets, which Karassery edited with detailed study notes, published by PK Brothers of Kozhikode in 1991, which was also prescribed for the undergraduate students in the University of Calicut during 1992-93, and a host of other institutions such as CBSE, Mysore University, Pondicherry University, Madras Higher Secondary
Board, Kannur University, Kerala University – Thiruvananthapuram, MG University in Kottayam; Bangalore University – Bangalore in Karnataka, which is running into its fourth edition.
In addition to that, Alochana, a collection of essays on literature and culture, published by Current Books of Thrissur in 1995, which was introduced as a text book for undergraduate classes in Mysore University during 1998-2000 and for BBM in Mangalore University – Mangalore during 2004 – 2006, while this book is running into its third edition. Saheehul Bukhari, the edited version with an Introductory note of Malayalam translation of Saheehul Bukhari, the collection of sayings of Prophet Muhammad by CN Ahmed Moulavi, published by Al-Huda Book Stall – Kozhikode in 1996, in which Karassery edited it and the book is running into third edition.
Onninte Darshanam is a collection of essays on literature and culture, published by Touring Book stall of Kozhikode in 1996, which again was the text book prescribed for the degree students in the University of Calicut during 2000-2001 and 2002-2003 and the book is running into its third edition. Karassery was antithetic to many social maladies including caste bias and social injustice. He relentlessy fought for caste, social, gender and religious equality.
Furthermore, Karassery even mooted for the introduction of a separate department across the country on Happiness. Throughout his writings and lectures, Karassery
championed the cause of maintaining a secular democracy for the benefit of the country and he is a votary for gender justice as well.
An activist to the core, taking on the might of those who are in high pedestal of society, if they involve in any kind of injustice, Karassery was one of the leading
lights of contemporary Kerala, who voices his concern at the first opportunity. For instance, Karassery had led a sit-in protes demanding the arrest of Rev Bishop
Fraco Mulakkal when the news of his alleged rape of a nun broke as early as September last year. Karassery is very sensitive to the social maladies and do not care two
hoots to call a spade a spade. There are huge fan following for Karassery Mash for his outspoken nature and great oratorical skills. Prof MN Karassery has also won N
Mohanan Award and Sambisivan Award besides many other accolades big and small. In fact, the last award Karassery received before the announcement of UR Ananathamurthy
Award was the N Mohanan Award presented by Sarojini, spouse of the late Malayalam poet, ONV Kurup on October 4, 2018. The Indian.News is wishing Prof MN Kakkassery in further contributing much at a time when Kerala is undergoing lot of stress.
