JC Daniel Award 2018 to Malayalam Actor Sheela

The prestigious JC Daniel Award 2018, consisting of Rs.5 lakh cash prize, statue and letter of appreciation will be conferred to Malayalam film actor, Sheela on June 27, 2019 in Thiruvananthapuram Nishagandhi Auditorium, at the Kerala State Film Award event, for her contribution towards Malayalam cinema.

Yesteryear Malayalam Actor, Sheela has won the prestigious J.C. Daniel Award 2018 for her contribution to the Malayalam cinema. The Culture Minister of Kerala, A.K. Balan announced the award in Thiruvananthapuram today. J.C. Daniel, which is the superior film award conferred by the Government of Kerala, which consists of Rs.5 lakh cash prize, a statue and a letter of appreciation. The award will be given away on July 27, 2019 at Nishagandhi Auditorium in Thiruvananthapuram along with the Kerala State Film Awards. The Committee led by renowned film director, K.S. Sethumadhavan as Chairman and veteran actor, Nedumudi Venu, screen play writier John Paul, Chairman of Kerala Chalachithra Academy, Kamal and Secretary, Department of Culture, Government of Kerala, Rani George (IAS) as Members collective selected the winner of J.C. Daniel Award. Earlier the cash prize was Rs.1 lakh. The present Government has increased the prize money to Rs.5 lakh. In 2017 Malayalam cinema lyricist and Director, Shreekumaran Thampi won the J.C. Daniel Award while in the previous years, veteran Malayalam film Director, Adoor Gopalakrishnan was the winner. In fact, Sheela is the second woman winner of J.C. Daniel Award as Aranmula Ponnamma had bagged this award back in 2005.

Film Foray

Sheela’s entry into the tinsel town was in Tamil. She has paired against M.G. Ramachandran in the Tamil cinema, Paasam. In 1962, her foray into Malayalam film world was in the movie, Bhaagyajathakam, which was directed by the Malayalam lyricist, P Bhaskaran. Since then, Sheela never looked back. Sheela had portrayed very powerful female-centric characters and conquered the hearts of Malayali audience. In 1969, Sheela received her first Best Actress Award for her acting skills in the movie, Kallichellamma. In 1971, Sheela again received the Best Actress Award for portraying powerful characters in movies such as Oru Penninte Katha (Tale of a woman), Sarashayya and Ummachu. Subsequently, in 1976, Sheela bagged the Best Actress for the third time for her brilliant acting performance in the film, Abubhavam. After 25 years, the veteran actor Sheela greased the paint again and did the wonderful character of Margaret in the movie, Akale, Directed by Shyama Prasad in 2004, which fetched her the Kerala State Award for the Best Second Actress. What is more, Sheela has also bagged the Best Character Actress National Award as well for the same film.

Guinness Book of World Records

Prem Nazir and Sheela have acted in excess of 130 movies creating Guinness Book of World Records.

Sheela has also entered into the Guinness Book of World Records by acting in maximum number of films as heroine with one particular actor, Prem Nazir. Sheela has paired with the late Prem Nazir in as many as 130 Malayalam movies. In 1980, after acting in the Mammootty starrer Malayalam movie, Spodanam, Sheela took a sabaatical from her active cinema career. The Sheela staged a strong come back through the Sathyan Anthikad Directed movie, Manasinakkare, portraying the character of Kochutheresiya. Furthermore, Sheela has also directed Malayalam movies such as Yakshaganam and Shikarangal. Sheela has also written a story for the movie Onnu Chirikku, with Mammootty in the lead. Apart from that, she has also authored a book in Malayalam titled, Kuyilinte Koodu and another novel named Pathamathe Cheque. She has also authored several short stories. Sheela is also an aesthetic painter and an interior designer.

Born in 1945 to Syrian Christian family in Thrissur to Kanimangalam Antony and Gracy in Thrissur, Sheela grew up in Ooty her father was an officer in Indian Railways. She eventually lived in many places in and finally settled down in Chennai. Sheela’s education was spread across many places such as Thrissur, Ooty, Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Edapally (Kochi) and Coimbatore. Sheela was married to Xavier, a journalist and that relationship ended in divorce. Eventually, Sheela married the actor, Ravichandran, who has acted with her in many films. The couple have a son, George who tried his hand in acting in Tamil, Malayalam and Telugu. Later, he took up acting career in the television serials. Currently, George is a well known real estate entrepreneur. George is married and the couple have two daughters.
