Apparently, it was during one of her sojourns to Varanasi, Pooja did get a chance to meet the artisans involved with Gulabi Meenakari. Initially, she had the intention of only to make a small collection of jewelry. To her dismay, Pooja realised the art form was on the verge of extinction. Eventually, she decided to revive the dying art form and went all out. In fact, Pooja designed a slew of Gulabi Meenakari jewelry, which are now being exhibited in Delhi.

What prompted her to revive this art form? “I realised the value of the art form and had the deep desire to help them. In order to keep the cost factor low, we have designed these jewelry in a frugal way. If we add more diamonds, then these jewelry items would become tad expensive. Given the current slowdown in the market, people do not prefer to fritter away money on expensive jewelry items. Precisely for the same reason, we have made the entire collection weight less, affordable and unique as well,” Pooja said.

Revival of Art Form

In order to help the artists to revive this dying art form, she had created unique designs and asked the artists of Gulabi Meenakari to use their age old craftsmanship. “So, the designs are unique and traditional, while the craftsmanship is purely traditional that elicited lot of interest among buyers. While the traditional Meenakari is nothing but Polki jewelry, which are being sold in the Jaipur market, which are generally found in white background. So, I experimented with the queen ring and queen bracelet in this pattern,” Pooja pointed out.

Pooja, hailing from Surat, has hands on experience for more than one and half decades, how did she find the collection challenging? “Yes, I found this collection very challenging as the artists I had worked with were only able to make moulds and the enamel work. I had entrusted two separate teams to do the setting and finishing. Only November last year I was thinking about making this collection and I was able to put into action only now. To tell you the fact, the entire work was a cumbersome process for me, as I had original thought behind the whole collection, the output came out to be the best,” Pooja added.
