Age Friendly India Initiative: “There are more elderly women than elderly men in India”

As the life expectancy has gone up in India, the rate of increase in the number of elders is in excess of the overall increase in population. Of the totally elderly population, there are more women than men, meaning there is trend towards feminisation in ageing. The percentage of people above 60 years of age is estimated to increase in India from the 9% in 2015 to 19% in 2050. This requires the Union Government to give special attention to the needs and requirements of the elderly population and make suitable arrangements for them in their planning.

Matter of Right

Care for elders in a society is a matter of right and not just welfare, said the intelligentsia, bureaucrats and doctors at the laungh of “Age Friendly India Initiative”, organised by IVH Senior Care and Wellness Health and You on October 7, 2018 at NDMC Convention centre, New Delhi, granced with the presence of N Chawla, Mayor, SDMC and Rajpal Singh, Member, Standing Committee, SDMC.

While speaking on the event, Dr. GS Grewal, Chairman, Wellness Health and You, said: “As India gears to have register three-fold jump in the number of elderly from about 100 million currently to around 300 million by 2050, there has to be a proper framework by the government to have required infrastructure and arrangements in place.”

Addressing the event, Swadeep Srivastava, Chief Belief officer and Founder, IVH SeniorCare, said, “The Government, as well as the community, needs to look into the needs of the senior citizens more than ever before. They need to understand that care is not just welfare but a matter of right for the elderly. There needs to be comprehensive plans for Elder Care in our country and the same has to be implemented and adhered to at community level. The elderly are sadly neglected in the country. The size of the elderly population is rising fast, in fact faster than the overall population. It is high time government focused on policies and arrangements for the senior citizens as well”.

Chawla said, “India is witnessing huge rise in the population of the elderly and we must gear up to not only to have physical infrastructure in place for them but also a system where there is love and respect for them in our society” said Mr N Chawla, mayor, SDMC, while speaking as the Chief Guest.

Singh pointed out, “It is unfortunate that our countrymen do not respect its seniors. This is lack of regard for our elders in our society and in our homes. It is time we recognized the contribution of the elderly and started loving and respecting them.”

A magazine titled ‘Voice of Elders’ was also released at the event which is the first publication for elders with the theme Nothing About us Without Us. IVH Senior Care is not only about the eldercare but it is an umbrella for all social and healthcare needs of elderly and already has 500+ satisfied customers. Whether a person needs domiciliary support or ICU support, we are the solution. We provide our services through a highly organized service structure lead by a care manager. His defence background made him stay with large groups of people like family in unimaginable terrains. His unique ability to understand people from different backgrounds makes him the ideal person to understand people’s needs. A care manger enters a home as a service provider and becomes a part of the family. He acts as go-to family member for all problems right from medical emergencies to planning impromptu parties.
