Sitar Maestro Niladri Kumar praises Sarthak Mudgal’s Tabla on Guitar performance of Raghupati Raghav track on Instagram
When the Guitar Percussionist, Sarthak Mudgal recently played on the latest trending track, Ragupati Raghav Raja Ram, instant praise came from none other than the legendary Sitar Maestro, Niladri Kumar.
Niladri Kumar took to Instagram: ‘Wow! You got me here here @sarthak_mudgal I’d love to make more music with your musical geniusness (if such a word exists).
Sarthak Mudgal, who was floating in cloud 9 also wrote on his Instagram account: “Wow! Thank you so much @Niladri_Kumar. This means the world to me coming from you….”
Niladri Kumar also posted a note with the photograph of Sarthak Mudgal: “Check out this incredible reactive version of #raghupati by this wonderful musician @sarthak_mudgal.’
Sarthak Mudgal is an AR Rahman scholar from Berklee School of Music, who plays Indian classical table on the Guitar. The musical genius has performed with legendary artists in the likes of Tigran Hamasyan, Rekha Bhardwaj, Shankar Mahadevan, Shankar Tucker, Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia and more. Mudgal is alternating between New York and Delhi, teaching a host of wannabe artists and also doing live shows. Of late, due to COVID-19 pandemic, he is based out of Delhi and focusing more on online jamming sessions. That’s how, Sarthak Mudgal the latest trending track of Sitar Masetro Niladri Kumar. The result is that the video became such an instant hit that the maestro himself ended up sharing Sarthak’s video on his story presenting his talent to the whole wide world through Instagram.
A disciple of the legendary Sitar Maestro, late Pandit Ravi Shankar, Niladri began learning the instrument under his father at the age of four! What’s more Niladri Kumar gave his first public performance at the age of six at Sri Aurobindo Asharam in Puducherry. Being part of the Masters of the percussion tour along side Zakir Hussain, the maestro has also worked with greats such as Jobas Hellborg and V Selvaganesh on their album, Kali’s Son and with John McLaughlin on album Floating Point. He has also worked with various music composers of Bollywood such as AR Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Pritam. The Sitar Maestro has been conferred the Sangeet Natak Akademi’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar, awarded to young musicians back in 2007. He has also received several other accolades. The concept initiated from a travelling sitar, which was customised by Niladri Kumar to create rock guitar sound out of it! Always experimenttal, he reduced the number of strings in his sitar from the whopping 20 to a mere five! Not content with that, Nildadri Kumar has also added an electric pickup inside sitar so that it sounded more like a guitar!In 2008, Kumar’s first full album composed using the instrument, titled Zitar got released. Also, he wrote the first track for the album Priority back in 2003. Subsequently, he improved the track and subsequent track by guaging audience reaction during live concerts. Furthermore, Niladri Kumar improvised the tracks adding components from a slew of genres including rock, electronic and lounge.
Now that Niladri Kumar is mightily impressed with the prowess of Sarthak Mudgal, he promises that he would do more such fusion music with the latter!
