Malayalam Cinema: Sheela reminisces Sathyan’s ‘Punctuality’ on his 50th death anniversary on June 15
It has been 50 years since the first Malayalam superstar Sathyan passed away on June 15.
Sheela, the evergreen heroine of Malayalam, remembers the immortal actor who fell in love with the silver screen till breathed his last. All the films made with Sathyan and Sheela in the lead, are part of the history of Malayalam cinema.
Reminiscing about her hero, Sheela says: “Time is more precious than anything else in cinema. Time is of the essence in cinema. Time is of the essence in cinema. The greatest virtue I have seen in Sathyan Mash (Master) is the punctuality. Sathyan Mash has stuck to his timing at a time when there were neither vehicle facilities, nor amenities or facilities that are available in cinema today, including the mobile telephony. No matter what problems he has, Sathyan will come at the right time. If you were told to arrive at the studio at six in the morning, he would have arrived at exactly 5.30 A.M. Sathyan Mash will be there without any complaint or grouse, even if none had turned up.”
On the need for the new generation stars to emulate puntuality, Sheela said:
“Sathyan Sir kept that schedule till he breathed his last. Not once has the timing changed. I often wanted to get to the location before him, but I have never succeeded in that endeavour. It is this timing of his that amazes me till this day. That is what I have to say to the new generation of Malayalam cinema. Even if you ask me what is the best characteristic of Sathyan Mash, I will point out this punctuality. I have acted with actors including Mammootty, Mohanlal and Jayaram. They too are very punctual like him. Today all the facilities and opportunities are there but time alone is priceless. When the memory of Sathyan Mash’s death has surpassed five decades, the value he gave for time, which is burning in my mind.”
