SIBF 2019: 38rd Edition Book Exhibition to be held at Sharjah Expo Centre from October 30 to November 9
The 38th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF 2019), with the participation of 2000 publishers from 81 countries will kick start on October 30 at the Sharjah Expo Centre and conclude on November 9.
The Sharjah International Book Fair 2019 (SIBF 2019) will commence at the Sharjah Expo Centre on October 30 and would conclude on November 9. Steve Harvey, the celebrated host from the US will be the Principal Guest of Honour. Harvey would speat at the 38th book fair at the inaugural event.
As one of the key emirate of the United Arab Emirates, Sharjah is celebrating its appointment as the UNESCO World Book Capital 2019, the organiser of the fair, Sharjah Book Authority (SBA) has coined this special title, Guest of Honour as a homage to the global cultural icon, Steve Harvey at this landmark year.
Billed as ‘Busiest man in Hollywood,’ the master entertainer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and New York Times best-selling author, all rolled into one personality will brush shoulders with the children and youth of the UAE on the second day of the fair. What is more, the award-winning motivational speaker Harvey will also be talking about his inspiring journey of becoming one of the most accomplished public figures in the world to the book loving audience. Harvey’s books will also be available for the book lovers to buy at the venue. For early birds, they will have the advantage of buying the copy signed by Harvey. Only 200 autographed books will be available at the SIBF 2019.

Cultural Personality of the Year
Meanwhile, the SBA had earlier last week announced that the celebrated Lebanese writer and critic, Dr. Yumna Al Eid a.k.a., Hikmat Sabbagh as the Cultural personality of the Year for her immense contribution to literature. In a career spanning well over 40 years, Sabbagh has been active in the literary world conducting many studies and research in a slew of related subjects such as literary criticism, comparative criticism, literary documentation and historical approaches. Sabbaghs’ acclaimed works include Practices of Literary Criticism, published in 1973; Social Connotations of Romanticism in Lebanon, published in 1979; Issues in Culture and Democracy, published in 1980; Knowledge of the Text, published in 1983; The Narrator: Standpoint and Form, published in 1986; In Poetic Saying (1987);
Narrative Techniques, published in 1990; Marxism and the Philosophy of Language of Mikhail Bakhtin, and Writing, Transformation in Transformation, an Approach to Literary Writing During the Lebanese war (1993); The Art of the Arabic Novel, Between the Specifics of the Story and Distinguished Messaging.
The book fair will also have elaborate programme of seminars, speeches and panel discussions, with the participation of acclaimed authors from across the globe.
In addition to Harvey and Yumna, other internationally acclaimed writers include the Nobel Prize-winning Turkish writer, Orhan Pamuk and Mark Manson, the Internet entrepreneur, whose works have transcended beyond 13 nations and his books were also translated in excess of 50 languages. In addition to these authors, there are others like James Clear, Elisabetta Dami, Ibtihaj Muhammad, Steven James, Ellah Wakatama Allfrey, Bernice L McFadden, HM Naqvi, Joanne C Hillhouse, Stephen Ritz, Kathleen Antrim, Leila Aboulela, Lynne Constantine, Margaret Busby, SK Ali, Natalia Cerezo, James Haskell, Justin Marozzi and Upile Chisala.
Indian Bollywood icon, Amitabh Bachchan will spice up the book fair this year, as he is taking part in the event marking the release of Oscar Award winning sound engineer from Kerala, Resul Pookutty’s book, titled: ‘Sounding Off: Amitabh Bachchan.’ The first copy of the book will be signed by Bachchan, who is making it to the fair for the first time. The launch of this book will happen on October 30 during the inauguration at 5.00 P.M., to 6.30 P.M. Recognising the super star’s contribution to the film industry, a photo exhibition is also lined up to celebrate the 50th year of Bachchan in the Bollywood. The expo will highlight the details about his films authored by the renowned film historian from India, SMM Ausaja.
Ravi DeeCee, Managing Director of DC Books told media last week that DC Books, being the key organiser of the events at the Indian pavilion said that caricatures by celebrated cartoonists pan India were included at the fair. The book, a journey through Bachchan’s acting career has the foreword written by renowned cricketer, Sachin Tendulkar.
Ravi DeeCee further added that SIBF had really been yearning for bringing the Academy Award winning lyricist of Bollywood, Gulzar for quite some time. Other celebrities who would make it to the event include Bollywood Actor, Manisha Koirala, acclaimed Indian author, Vikram Seth, Lisa Ray, Indian model and social activist, Gulshan Grover, Bollywood actor, Malayalam playback singer, KS Chithra, Navdeep Singh Suri, the former Indian Ambassador to the UAE and Malayalam film actors including Tovino Thomas and Siddique. Ravi DeeCee also said that to spice up the event, the award winning journalist, Ravish Kumar, Associate Editor of NDTV and Editorial Director of the same television channel, Sonia Singh.
Aming the fiction writers, the list of participants include Jeet Thayil and Anita Nair (novelists), Ashwin Sanghi, the thriller writer and other authors such as Anand Neelakantan and Indian Canadian author of the book: ‘The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari,’ Robin Sharma. From the Malayalam literary horizon, authors such as poets Sharath Chandra Varma, Anitha Thampi and Veerankutty, novelists such as KP Sudheera, Chandra Prakash and a host of other writers are taking part at the SIBF 2019.
As per Mohan Kumar, the External Affairs Executive at SIBF a special Writer’s Forum for budding and established authors has been lined up in the Indian pavilion, where around 150 writers will get the opportunity to release their books. The venue would be a perfect platform for the new writers to interact with established authors and gain enriched experience from the Fair as a take home.
